Introducing Shah Rukh Khan’s billionaire neighbour: Mumbai’s real estate mogul with a net worth exceeding Rs 11,560 crore

In the vibrant city of dreams, Mumbai, the success narrative of Bollywood luminary Shah Rukh Khan serves as an inspiration to countless aspiring actors. Emerging from a non-filmy background, Khan initiated his acting journey with the Doordarshan series Fauji, gradually ascending to the pinnacle of Bollywood triumph.

Over the past three decades, Shah Rukh Khan has not only captivated audiences with his multifaceted performances, charismatic demeanour, and quick-witted humour but has also accumulated a staggering net worth exceeding Rs 6,300 crore, as reported by The Times of India. Beyond his acting endeavours, the Bollywood icon has diversified his financial portfolio by investing in various ventures, significantly bolstering his net worth annually.

Meet Subhash Runwal, the chairman of the Runwal Group and a prominent figure in Mumbai’s real estate landscape. Residing in a sea-front home in Bandra, adjacent to Shah Rukh Khan, Runwal, initially a skilled accountant, took a leap of faith in 1978 by resigning from his position at Ernst & Ernst to plunge into the real estate realm.

Regarded as one of Mumbai’s leading real estate entrepreneurs, Runwal commenced his journey with a 10,000-square-foot housing society in Thane. Subsequently, the Runwal Group achieved a milestone with its inaugural flagship project, Runwal Nagar, a cluster of 16 towers. Following success in real estate, Runwal attempted diversification into the steel and pharmaceutical sectors but fell short of replicating his real estate triumphs. Redirecting his focus, he embarked on constructing affordable homes for middle-class families in Mumbai.

The Runwal Group expanded its horizons into mall construction when Runwal’s sons joined the family business. Following the inauguration of the R Mall in Mulund by Amitabh Bachchan, the Runwals undertook the development of the R-City Mall in Ghatkopar, spanning an impressive 1.2 million square feet.

As Runwal continues to reside in his sea-facing mansion next to Shah Rukh Khan, the allure of premium residences in Mumbai has not waned. In 2022, Bollywood power couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone invested a staggering Rs 119 crore to acquire a quadruplex in a high-end residential tower close to Mannat. This opulent property spans the 16th to 19th floors, covering an expansive 11,266 square feet of carpet area.
